Enjoying oregon wine country

In generally, the Oregon wineries are small and winemaker or family owned. In addition, the majority of the Oregon wine country is located in the valleys that run between the Cascade Mountains and throughout the state. Many are also found in the western portion of the state within its Coastal Range.

The Cool Grapes of Oregon Wineries

The northwestern portion of Oregon is known for its wines derived from varieties of cool-climate grapes. The long hours of sunshine in the summer provide enough light for the grapes to ripen. At the same time, the marine breezes help keep the grapes cool and cause them to ripen gradually to perfection. Grape varieties grown here include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris Riesling, and Pinot noir.

Southern Oregon Wines

The vineyards in southern Oregon tend to be higher in elevation and in a warmer, much drier, elevation than those in the northwest. At the same time, this area has a variety of unique 'micro climates', resulting in different flavors from wineries in this area. Applegate Valley AVA, Umpqua Valley AVA, and Rogue Valley AVA are all found here. Rhone and Bordeaux are commonly grown here, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot noir, and French Burgundian.

The Willamette Valley AVA is the largest wine region of Oregon, stretching 100 miles from Portland to Eugene. The majority of these Oregon wineries can be found west of Interstate 5. Originally, the Willamette Valley AVA consisted of 3.3 million acres, but it was later divided into smaller AVA’s.
